Bondi Water Resource Recovery Facility (WRRF)
The Water Resource Recovery Facility at North Bondi provides reliable wastewater services to keep our community safe by ensuring that public health is preserved through providing clean sanitation of wastewater. It also protects Bondi Beach from wastewater related pollution.
The facility will be 70 years old in 2023. It was designed to service 250,000 people and is now servicing over 750,000 people – this is three times larger than what it was designed for. To ensure that wastewater does not create a hazard for Sydney the facility is now in need of a major upgrade due to the increase of the local population and the age of the asset.
Over the next 10 years Sydney Water is investing in the program of works to improve wastewater services at the Bondi WRRF for our current and future customers. This work will also look at expanding on resource recovery opportunities in provision of recycled water and biogas to produce electricity.
Our short- and long-term plans will ensure that our wastewater system remains reliable and can continue to treat wastewater in an environmentally safe and sustainable way.
