Huntley Street Bridge traffic update

The Green Square Stormwater Drain Project will significantly reduce flooding in and around
the area during torrential rain. It will help facilitate the Green Square Town Centre development,
a major new residential, retail and cultural hub.

The project involves installing two kilometres of stormwater drains from Epsom Road, Zetland
to the existing stormwater system at Alexandra Canal.

What to expect during construction

We’re widening Shea’s Creek underneath Huntley Street Bridge to increase the capacity of the stormwater system. Our work has involved the closure of one lane of traffic on Huntley Street, Alexandria. We originally planned to reopen the road to two-way traffic flow by January 2017.

Our work at Huntley Street Bridge is complex. It involves the relocation of 29 different utilities including water, stormwater, sewage, telecommunications, electricity and gas services so we can rebuild the bridge in stages. The complexity of this utility relocation and the availability of service provider specialists to complete some of the work has delayed our progress. We have streamlined our construction approach to speed up completion of these works on the bridge. One‑way traffic flow on Huntley Street will now continue until late July 2017. Traffic flow will continue eastbound only on Huntley Street between Euston Road to Bourke Road. Traffic travelling westbound along Huntley Street, from Bourke Road to Euston Road, will continue to be diverted to Maddox Street.

We understand our work has been disruptive and appreciate your patience and understanding.

February to July 2017: One-way traffic flow
Work will continue on the northern side of the bridge to finish relocating the gas main. Construction work will include:
• closing the northern footpath on Huntley Street
• building new bridge piles (support structures)
• bridge deck construction including preparation for relocating electricity and optic fibre services.

Pedestrian access
The northern footpath will be closed near our worksite. Diversions will be in place to guide people safely around the work areas.

Late July 2017: Return to two-way traffic flow
Once the first stage of the bridge deck has been finished we can reopen the road to two lanes of traffic.
Construction work will include:
• relocating electrical and optic fibre services into the northern footpath
• building a temporary northern footpath platform over Shea’s Creek
• further bridge deck construction.

August 2017 to April 2018: Bridge construction (southern side)
Two-way traffic flow will continue while we build the southern side the bridge. Construction work will include:
• service relocation and connections
• finishing and reopening the southern Huntley Street footpath to pedestrians

Pedestrian access
We will reopen the northern footpath in August 2017 then close the southern footpath on Huntley Street
near our worksite. Diversions will be in place to guide people safely around the work areas.

May to July 2018: Bridge work continues
We will complete minor works to finish the bridge and restore all impacted areas, including the road surface on and near the bridge.
