Bringing you and nature back to Brighton!

We are revitalising a section of Muddy Creek in in Brighton-Le-Sands to create a healthy, vibrant and community- friendly waterway.

In 2016, Sydney Water engaged the community and other key stakeholders to plan for the transformation of Muddy Creek. FInd out more about the engagement outcomes here.

Now, we are ready to get started!

Project timing - Start: Monday 7 November 2022. Finish: late-2024.

What are we doing?

We will be working along a section of Muddy Creek between Bestic Street and West Botany Street to:

  • replace the old concrete banks with sandstone and native plants
  • install a new elevated walkway to replace the existing pedestrian bridge near the netball courts
  • include a new seating area looking over Muddy Creek
  • plant a number of saltmarsh along the creek to improve the natural habitat
  • create a new trail from the Caravan Park to Bestic Street.

Our site compound will be in Whiteoak Reserve which, for safety reasons, will be closed off to the public for the duration of the project. Click here to find out more About Our Work.

What are the benefits?

The project will improve the local environment and create a beautiful space for the community to enjoy.

Planting a diverse range of native plants and an additional salt marsh will improve the creek’s health and natural character.

It will also ensure the stability of the banks, making sure it remains an inviting community space for generations to come.

The new pedestrian bridge has been installed and will be open for use by the end of 2023!

The installation of the new bridge was seamless – we were able to place it in one lift with no issues or incidents!:

    New bridge below:

Demolition and concrete work from the pedestrian bridge to Bestic Street is now complete!

We’ve started laying the sandstone blocks along the creek banks. This will stabilize the banks, reduce erosion and enhance aquatic habitats.

We've started preparing the landscaping work to begin!

In September, the landscaping team will start their work beautifying the banks and parkland in Whiteoak Reserve.
After we lay sandstone boulders, we’ll start planting the 920 shrubs, 39 new trees and over 62,000 native plants.
Check out the new concrete channel!

The photo shows divots in this section of the channel base. These act as homes and hiding places for water creatures to hang out.

We're well into the construction phase of this project. Installation of the cofferdam is complete! This, along with our de-watering pumps, allows workers to work safely in a tidal waterway.

We have been demolishing the base of the creek and laying down the new concrete.

Stages of the concrete renewal process.

Next, we'll start preparing the wall on the side of Sheralee Tourist Caravan Park for renewal. To do this, we will clean it using a water blaster, then apply sprayed concrete to strengthen and renew the wall!

Working closely with our neighbours at the caravan park, we’ve come up with ways to protect the residents from spray during these activities.

On site with the General Manager of Sheralee Tourist Caravan Park.

It’s important we work closely with the surrounding community and get their feedback so we can reduce disruption as best as we can while we transform this old waterway into a fresh, community-friendly environment!

    Update: 30 October 2023

We're about 2 months away from finishing all of the demolition works with the creek in the section between Bestic Street and the pedestrian bridge.

This November, we'll be removing replacing the pedestrian bridge. This will take upto 4 weeks to finish. The bridge will be open for use by the new year.

Transport NSW will be installing another new bridge closer towards West Botany Street - this is part of their plans for a shared pedestrian and cyclist pathway. A five-kilometre active transport shared pedestrian and cyclist pathway will start at Bestic Street, Brighton Le Sands, linking to the existing cycleway at Muddy Creek and continuing south through Bicentennial Park, Rockdale and Scarborough Park, Monterey, ending at Chuter Avenue. Click here for more information on this project.

We're working with Bayside Council and Transport NSW for the final landscape design in Whiteoak Reserve. Later this year, well be able to share more information on what they have planned in Whiteoak Reserve.

    22 August 2023

We’ve have completed 35% demolition and 30% of laying new concrete slabs of the 835m section of Muddy Creek we’re transforming.

In September, the landscaping team will move in and start their work beautifying the banks and parkland in Whiteoak Reserve. You’ll notice more work vehicles, crews, and deliveries during this time.

    05 March 2023

De-watering the creek involves 24-hour pumping to manage surface water and prevent it entering the works area for the duration of the project. We have 4 in total.

These pumps need to be turned up to drain or prevent water entering excavations prior to the day work shift - we will do this between 3am and 7am. The pumps are located away from noise sensitive areas, so we do not expect this to be disruptive.

See below images of the empty creek:

As a way to reduce the duration of our work and take advantage of the low tides, we are working on Satruday's between 8 am and 1 pm. Depending the weather or tidal flow, these hours might be adjusted slightly.

    02 February 2023

We're almost ready to start construction work inside the creek!

Below is an image of the tidal barriers installed near Bestic Street.

Once we finished installing the tidal barriers, well need to flush out the water from the creek so we can safely work within it.

This will be done by using dewatering pumps daily to by-pass the water in the creek. There will be an ecologist present to monitor aquatic life and other native wildlife and we will have mitigation measures in place to ensure they aren’t left behind once the stream dries.

We'll share some photos here of what the creek looks like after we flush the water out!

    29 November 2022

We have almost finished laying down the haul road. We will run over the road to flatter any bumps on Monday and Tuesday next week. Once this is complete, we will no longer need to use the roller machine. We know this has caused some inconvenience to the surrounding residents and we'd like to thank you for your patience and understanding during this time.

This week we are going to set up our site sheds and other worker amenities within Whiteoak Reserve.

    You can expect:

    • an increase in truck movements
    • use of a crane to lift and lower the sheds
    • two generators will be used for power until we are able to install and connect the sheds to powerpoles.

WORK ACTIVITY UPDATE: 14 November 2022

Installation of the ATF fencing and sediment controls within Whiteoak Reserve is almost complete. This week we are preparing to lay down the haul road. This involves:

    • an increase in truck movements
    • excavation to break up the grass along the truck route
    • a roller machine using vibration to flatten the ground
    • laying down the temporary gravel road.

You will notice and increase in noise while we carry out this work. We expect this work to take up to 3 weeks.
