We’re working with Cumberland City Council to look at ways we can improve waterway health, environmental impacts and the visual appeal of the Surrey Street Chain of Parks.

The parks in this project include Surrey Street Reserve and Elizabeth Street Park.

Sydney Water has a Waterway Health Improvement Program. One of the main aims is to improve the quality of the stormwater before it enters the Duck River in the Surrey Street area.

This program will remove plastic waste and other litter or debris from the stormwater before it enters our waterways resulting in improved ecological and social outcomes for the community.

The Council has been preparing designs for the four parks as a whole. The design and delivery will be completed in two stages:

  • Stage 1 (complete) – includes upgrades to Murdock St and Maunder Reserve. The Council has funding and plans to complete these upgrades this financial year. Community consultation was completed in late 2021.
  • Stage 2 – create an integrated open space with water quality improvement designs. This would also include the potential road closure of Surrey Street to create a larger continuous open space.

We’re in the early planning stages and we would like to understand how you use the park and potential ideas for improvement. We’ll use this information and other technical assessments to prepare a masterplan for the park including a preliminary concept design.

The timing of delivery for future stages depend on Sydney Water and Council funding priorities.

    Thank you to those who participated and provided feedback on the Surrey Street chain of parks draft Landscape Plan survey we conducted earlier this year which closed for comments on 20 June 2022.

    Sydney Water and Cumberland City Council are currently working together to review the responses and are discussing ways to ensure that the community feedback is considered in the delivery of the upgrades at Surrey Street chain of parks.

  • Waterway Health Improvement

    The Waterway Health Improvement Program, in conjunction with council programs, is required to help reduce the impact of growth on liveability and to improve waterway health.

    Urban stormwater has been acknowledged as the primary cause of decline in waterway health and aquatic ecosystems. This project aims to mitigate the adverse effects of this stormwater run-off and improve the ecological and social value of Sydney’s waterways.

    The main project objectives are to improve waterway health by:

    • reducing sediment, suspended solids and nutrients from stormwater runoff discharging to waterways
    • removing plastic waste and other gross pollutants from stormwater runoff discharging to waterways
    • providing ecological and social value improvement to waterways and contribute to amenity and liveability for customers.

  • Landscape Plan Overview

    We have developed a Landscape Plan for the park and the preliminary concept design for the waterway health improvement feature. View the draft Landscape Plan.

    The draft landscape plan includes a number of waterway health improvement features and other park improvements. Some of the key features include

    • Replacing the concrete stormwater channel with with native plants and rocks
    • New vegetation and wetland designed to improve waterway health by natural filtering and cleansing processes
    • Planting and increased wildlife will assist in creating a balanced ecosystem to manage the population of mosquitos
    • A lookout point, boardwalk, pedestrian paths and seating to enjoy the natural setting
    • Providing additional trees and plants to encourage wildlife and shade
    • Improved paths and connections
    • A car parking area
    • A sealed pedestrian path from Military Road to O’Neill Street
    • An outdoor fitness equipment area
