Currans Hill Reservoir inspiring young Picassos and the next generation of construction workers

Last week representatives from the Prospect South to Macarthur (ProMac) Program visited Manooka Valley Preschool in Currans Hill for an arts and crafts morning ahead of the start of Stage 2 of the Currans Hill Reservoir Project.

Sydney Water Delivery Partner, ACCIONA, and Principal Contractor for the Currans Hill Reservoir build, Brockman Engineering, joined 20 pre-schoolers in decorating hard hats using coloured markers. The pre-schoolers gifted their Picasso masterpieces to the Brockman Team ahead of them mobilising onsite to build a new reservoir for the community.

The morning began with a short talk from the Delivery Partner, followed by a video showing the original reservoir being demolished. The team talked about the importance of safety equipment and where drinking water comes from. Responses from the kids included “safety!”, “helmet!”, “hat!”, “the ocean!” “drink bottles!” and “pipes!”. When asked what they wanted to be when they grew up, responses included Spiderman, doctor and guitar teacher. The highlight for the ProMac team was hearing one of the pre-schoolers saying that he would “never forget this!”.

40 hi-vis vests were donated for the children to take home as a show and tell gift for their families. By the end of the activities, the children looked as though they were ready to step onto a real construction site! Several other engagement activities are planned with the daycare once construction starts.

The new reservoir will stand 20.4 metres high and will hold 6 million litres of water, equivalent to 83 standard home swimming pools, or 109, 000 seven-minute showers. The new reservoir is expected to be operational by late 2023.
