After three months of work on site, Sydney Water has completed Stage 1 of the Currans Hill Reservoir project under the Prospect South to Macarthur (ProMac) program, demolishing the old reservoir.

Sydney Water is building new drinking water infrastructure as part of its long-term plan to extend the city’s water capacity and supply for future growth and development in the South-West. Currans Hill Reservoir is one of 18 packages of work currently being delivered under the ProMac program.

McMahon Services was engaged to deliver the demolition phase of the project. The tank stood 20.4 metres high and was constructed of 180 panels. A 100-tonne and 50-tonne crane were used to dismantle the existing reservoir panel by panel, from top to bottom. A 5-tonne excavator was then used to remove the grout that secured the final row of panels to the concrete foundation.

To ensure the Currans Hill community were prepared for the works, the ACCIONA and McMahon team undertook 206 resident door knocks from November 2021 until May 2022. In addition, 6,077 community letters were distributed since January, in an effort to keep the community informed.

Four sensitive receivers were identified close to the site and were proactively managed by the team, with welfare checks carried out fortnightly. One sensitive receiver went as far as extending an invite into their home for coffee and cake! Despite the impact of the works on this quiet community, no complaints were received.

Stage 2 of the project will commence later in the year and is expected to be completed by early 2023. The new fully welded steel reservoir will stand at the same height as the old reservoir.
