The stormwater channel in Deakin Park drains from the M4 to the Duck River, a tributary of the Parramatta River. Urban stormwater has been acknowledged as the main cause of decline in waterway health.

The park has been identified as a site for a water quality improvement project for the Parramatta River catchment incorporating the existing stormwater channel.

The timing of delivery for future stages depend on Sydney Water and Council funding priorities.

Thank you to those who participated and provided feedback on the Deakin Park draft Landscape Plan survey we conducted at the end of last year which closed for comments on 22 December 2021.

Sydney Water and City of Parramatta Council are currently working together to review the responses and are discussing ways to ensure that the community feedback is considered in the delivery of the upgrades at Deakin Park.

Next steps: We’ll keep you updated as to when the concept design will be displayed for public exhibition.

In the meantime, you can register for project updates under the ‘Stay Informed’ tab.

The feedback from earlier engagement has been used to develop the draft Landscape Plan for the park and the preliminary concept design for the waterway health improvement feature. View the draft Landscape Plan.

The draft landscape plan includes a number of waterway health improvement features and other park improvements. Some of the key features include

    • Replacing the concrete stormwater channel with gently sloping banks stabilised with native plants and rocks
    • New vegetation and wetland designed to improve waterway health by natural filtering and cleansing processes
    • Planting and increased wildlife will assist in creating a balanced ecosystem to manage the population of mosquitos
    • A lookout point, boardwalk, pedestrian paths and seating to enjoy the natural setting
    • Retaining the existing playground and open space areas for passive recreation
    • Providing additional trees and plants to encourage wildlife and shade
    • Grassed mound towards Silverwater Road to act as a sound buffer
    • Improved paths and connections
    • Retaining and improving dog park facilities – double gate, drinking fountain and dog bowl
    • Improving park boundary appearance
    • Reducing noise impacts from Silverwater Road

A small area of the existing dog park is planned to be used for one of the wetland filtration cells and ponds. However, we are planning to relocate the dog fence closer to Beaconsfield Road to offset some of this open space.

Tell us what you think about the draft Landscape Plan and proposed changes by completing the feedback form.

In June 2021, we asked the community for ideas and suggestions for upgrading Deakin Park in Silverwater. Thank you to everyone who provided feedback. This feedback was used to develop the draft Landscape Plan for the park and the preliminary concept design for the waterway health improvement feature.

We received 53 responses to the community survey. Most of the responses were from residents who reside in Silverwater and visit Deakin Park at least weekly.

Out of the 53 Respondents who provided feedback, there was strong support for:

    • A range of environmental initiatives and improvements
    • Shade cover
    • Additional seating and picnic areas
    • Additional trees and plantings
    • Improved dog facilities
    • Improved pedestrian connections in and around the park

At this early stage in the project we would like to better understand how the community uses the park and ideas for improvement.

We will use this information and other technical assessments to prepare a landscape plan for the park including a preliminary concept design.
