Improving waterway health in Sydney

Example of a stormwater treatment area in Canberra

We're partnering with local Councils across Sydney to upgrade parks and improve the health of waterways like creeks and rivers. These projects will help:

• provide better access to the parks

• offer a wider range of recreational uses

• improve waterway health and the environment

• improve pedestrian and cycle connections.

Learn more about each park below as we progress.

We're using water sensitive urban design (WSUD) to improve waterway health around Sydney. Find out what WSUD is here.

In November 2017, Sydney Water sought community feedback on options for improving waterway health at Hoskins Park, Dulwich Hill.

The benefits to waterway health of planted stormwater treatment systems include cleaner stormwater entering the Hawthorne Canal; new habitat areas for native plants and animals; and potential to use the treated stormwater to improve the lawn areas within the park.

Majority of people we heard from in November 2017 supported the inclusion of a rain garden at Hoskins Park (60% voted ‘yes’).

Based on the feedback received, we revised our proposal for a stormwater treatment area. The revised design can be viewed here.

    What we heard:
    • The lawn space adjacent to the playground was highly valued by the community and a rain garden was not supported in this location
    • Additional paths were generally not supported in Hoskins Park
    • There was support for an increase in areas of native planting and a new frog pond

    What we have done:
    • Relocated the rain garden away from the playground
    • Included irrigation to help improve the quality of the lawn
    • Removed any new paths
    • Included native planting and a frog pond in the concept

Sydney Water and Inner West Council want to hear what you think about the revised design. We encourage you to drop by during one of our community events to share your ideas and opinions:

    • Johnson Park on Friday 10 August – anytime between 9.30 am and 10.30 am*
    • Hoskins Park on Saturday 11 August - anytime between 2.00 pm and 4.00 pm

Look out for the Sydney Water banners to find us on the day!

If you can’t make it to one of the community events, you can click here to provide feedback online. The online survey will be open until 24 August 2018.

    * Note: This community session will be held in conjunction with the weekly Magic Yellow Bus event. In the event of rain, the session will be postponed. For updates and wet weather cancellations, check our website www.sydneywatertalk.com.au or the Inner West Council's Twitter feed.

The image below hows the areas in the park we are considering adding landscaped stormwater treatment.

    Next steps

If a landscaped stormwater treatment area is supported by the community, Sydney Water will work closely with Council’s Master Plan team to integrate the treatment area with other works planned for the park, including amenities such as seating and barbeques, cycleways and pathways.

The draft Master Plan will then go through Council’s approvals process including a public exhibition period.
