Water resource recovery facility (WRRF) off Armour Street

Our Bellambi WRRF was originally commissioned in the 1950’s as a primary treatment plant treating both dry and wet weather flows. In 2005, the Port Kembla, Bellambi and Wollongong systems through transfer of dry weather flows from all three sub systems to an amplified and upgraded facility at Wollongong for treatment, reuse and disposal. Dry weather flows are now diverted from Port Kembla to Wollongong.

A new treatment facility at Bellambi was commissioned in 2007 and consists of an internal transfer wastewater pumping station (WWPS), covered inlet screens and a storage tank, a primary treatment unit (ActifloTM) and ultra-violet (UV) disinfection facility. The WWPS delivers raw wastewater to Wollongong and the old disused primary treatment plant assets at the facility were decommissioned and removed in 2010.

During wet weather, additional flow overflows from the WWPS to the facility are stored in storage tanks. When they are full, the flows are treated in the treatment facility and discharged via the ocean outfall at Bellambi Point into the South Pacific Ocean. Stored raw wastewater is transferred to Wollongong via the WWPS at the end of the wet weather event until flows have subsided.

No biosolids processing is provided from the facility.

We've just finished replacing pumps at the WWPS and plan to replace the variable speed drives (VSDs) which control the flow of energy from the electrical mains to the motors on the pumps that pump the wastewater around our network.

Construction is currently expected to start around second quarter of 2026. This timeframe is subject to change pending investigation results, funding approvals and weather conditions.

We'll also be upgrading lighting and flooring in switchrooms at our WRRF which is currently expected to start around second quarter 2024. This work will take place inside existing buildings within each of the facilities.

We'll be replacing the variable speed drives (VSDs) which control the flow of energy from the electrical mains to the motors on the pumps that pump the wastewater around our network.

Construction is currently expected to start around the third quarter of 2024. This timeframe is subject to change pending investigation results, funding approvals and weather conditions.

We're also installing a new odour control unit (OCU). OCUs are installed at strategic locations to improve ventilation of the wastewater network and reduce odorous compounds to acceptable levels for atmospheric discharge. They primarily use activated carbon to filter and produce clean air.

Construction is currently expected to start around the third quarter of 2024. This timeframe is subject to change pending investigation results, funding approvals and weather conditions.
