What is Sydney Science Park?

Sydney Science Park (SSP) is a $5b research, education and residential development hub situated across 287ha at Luddenham, Western Sydney, within the Aerotropolis growth precinct.

Sydney Water is partnering with developer Celestino, to establish Western Sydney’s first, large-scale commercial application of integrated water and recycling services

    When will it be completed?

Water, wastewater and recycled water is expected to be available on site by late 2022.

Sydney Science Park is expected to welcome its first businesses in 2024.

What’s exciting about this wastewater treatment facility? What can it do?

Sydney Water has designed a bespoke, onsite treatment hub for Sydney Science Park, linked to a ‘smart’ wastewater system to recycle water to a high quality for commercial and construction use, as well as irrigation for public, open spaces. It will lead the way for future, similar developments across Western Sydney.

Smart systems at Sydney Science Park include digital twins of the actual systems. They will monitor a range of environmental factors including current and forecast temperatures, forecast rainfall, humidity and soil moisture levels, and use this real-time information to predict weather conditions and deliver on-demand recycled water supplies.

This is the first large-scale, commercial application of Sydney Water’s approach to integrated water cycle management

How much recycled water will be produced?

Initially the hub will have the capacity to produce 1.2 million litres of recycled water each day – that’s enough recycled water for around 10,000 people for toilet flushing, clothes washing, watering gardens and outdoor spaces. Over time, capacity is expected to double to 2.4 million litres per day.
