Water main renewal on Old Barrenjoey Road, Avalon Beach

Our team will begin working to renew the water main along Old Barrenjoey Road on Monday 10 March. We'll first start with our night work in Section 1. We'll write to the community again before the day work in Section 2 starts. Our night work hours are 8 pm and 5 am, Monday nights to Friday mornings (four nights a week). We won’t work Friday, Saturday or Sunday nights.

We’ll soon begin renewing a section of the water main along Old Barrenjoey Road in Avalon Beach. You may remember, we completed some investigations between November 2022 and April 2023 to help us plan for this work. Since then, we’ve been working behind the scenes to refine our plans for construction.

We know that Old Barrenjoey Road is a busy street that is much loved by locals and visitors and supports many local businesses. While our work will be disruptive, we will make every effort to reduce our impact on local businesses, residents, and pedestrians as much as possible.

Following feedback from residents and businesses, and in consultation with Northern Beaches Council, we’ve planned this work to start in March 2025, to avoid working over the peak summer season. We’ll also do a mix of day work and night work hours to balance the needs of neighbours, pedestrians, and businesses.

In December 2022 and January 2023, we carried out some investigations to confirm where our pipes and other services are below the ground.

We need to return to do some additional investigations further up Old Barrenjoey Road. The map below the page shows our work area.

Our additional investigations will take up to three weeks to complete, weather and ground conditions permitting.

Our investigations will be done at night between Monday 1 May and Friday 19 May 2023. Our night work hours are 8 pm to 5 am, Monday nights to Friday mornings. We won’t work Friday, Saturday or Sunday nights.

Our remaining investigations will take up to four nights to complete, weather and ground conditions permitting. Our work will start on the night of Monday 16 January and is expected to finish by the morning of Friday 20 January. Our night work hours are 8 pm to 5 am, Monday nights to Friday mornings. We won’t work Friday, Saturday or Sunday nights.

Once we’ve finished our investigations, we will return later to start construction of the new water main. We’ll write to you again to let you know before we start.

Thank you to everyone who provided feedback in our night work schedule survey. We have carefully considered all feedback to finalise our night work schedule. We’ll work up to four consecutive nights a week from Monday night to Friday morning.

Our investigations will take about three weeks to complete following this schedule, weather and ground conditions permitting. Our work will start on Wednesday 30 November and is expected to finish by Friday 23 December 2022.

We’re asking the local community for feedback on our night work schedule, to minimise the impact our work has on you. If you’ve already provided your feedback on our night work schedule via the business survey in October, you don’t need to complete this survey again.

• Proposed night work schedule: Our proposal is to work four consecutive nights a week from Monday night to Friday morning, followed by three nights off (Friday, Saturday and Sunday).
• Alternative option A: Three consecutive nights a week from Monday night to Thursday morning, followed by four nights off (Thursday to Sunday). Using this schedule, our night work would take longer to complete overall compared to the proposed night work schedule.
• Alternative option B: Five consecutive nights a week from Monday night to Saturday morning, followed by two nights off (Saturday and Sunday). Using this schedule, our night work would take less time to complete overall compared to the proposed night work schedule.
